The story

A redwood pergola, grown over in grapevine, that made the backyard into a dining room with a sky for a ceiling.

The yard was generous but undefined. We built a redwood pergola over a long dining table and let a mature grapevine climb the beams until the ceiling filled in green. Woven pendants hang on rope over the table, the deck steps down to a stone terrace with a fire bowl and grills, and a black arbor gate closes the whole thing in. At golden hour the light comes through the vine in pieces. It's where dinner happens now, most nights.
